Set between palms and the sea, this expansive six-sided pool was shaped by both the family’s vision and the demands of its coastal setting.

 

Set on a former palm nursery near Ruby Bay beach, this project called for a pool that was as distinctive as the property itself. The clients wanted a generous entertaining space, with room for grandchildren to play, swimmers to enjoy the water and others to sit, cool off and remain a part of the action.

The result is a six-sided, 130,000-litre pool with layered steps, shallow platforms and wide perimeter seating. Rather than forcing a standard shape onto the site, the design makes full use of the available space.

The coastal location brought significant constraints. The property sits only around one metre above sea level, with a high water table and known flood risk. The pool was therefore built partially above ground, 360mm higher than the house floor, helping keep it clear of the floodplain and reduce excavation into the groundwater below.

Resource consent was required due to the pool’s proximity to the mean high-water spring. As the site is also on an old Māori pā, excavation was carefully coordinated with local iwi so work could be monitored.

Construction involved constant groundwater pumping, close attention to tides and careful timing around the weather. A wide timber deck now links the raised pool back to the home, completing a design shaped as much by the site as by the way the family wanted to live.

I was born in Canada, and grew up around Vancouver and the mountains of British Columbia. My love of pristine environments led me to New Zealand and eventually to the mountains, lakes and rivers of the central North Island which is home. My family’s heritage is here, and it’s from here that Korio traverses the planet.
