Perched in the Kaikōura hills, this sleek fibreglass pool pairs robust construction methods with a polished finish that belies its strength. The region’s seismic conditions meant the homeowners did their homework to find the most resilient and robust pool options – and Mayfair’s proprietary construction and finishing methods fit the bill perfectly.

 

Perched in the Kaikōura hills, this bespoke pool project is set alongside an architecturally designed home, capturing uninterrupted views across rolling farmland to the ocean in one directionn, and the snow-dusted peaks of the Kaikoura Ranges in the other.

The pool was envisioned as a natural extension of the home’s modern lines—designed to complement the natural surroundings.

Constructed using insulated wall panels and finished with a Mayfair fibreglass shell, the pool delivers a sleek, durable, and energy-efficient solution ideal for the region’s rugged and seismic conditions. In an earthquake-prone area like Kaikōura, fibreglass was the smartest and safest choice—its flexibility and structural integrity offering peace of mind without compromising on aesthetics or performance. A family-friendly custom step was crafted for easy access, and an automatic cover was seamlessly integrated for safety, heat retention, and a clean, uncluttered look when the pool is not in use.

Framing the space is a combination of glass and aluminum fencing: two sides feature frameless glass panels that provide safety and wind protection in a high wind zone without interrupting sightlines from the home to the pool or from the pool to the sweeping vistas beyond. The remaining side is bordered by streamlined aluminum fencing, ensuring both function and a cohesive visual flow.

The clients wanted a pool that felt peaceful, practical, and enduring—a place to soak in the views and extend their time outdoors through multiple seasons. The result is a sophisticated, low-maintenance retreat that balances form and function with the quiet drama of its hilltop location. This pool is a striking example of how thoughtful design and expert execution can bring a bold vision to life, no matter the complexity of the setting.

I was born in Canada, and grew up around Vancouver and the mountains of British Columbia. My love of pristine environments led me to New Zealand and eventually to the mountains, lakes and rivers of the central North Island which is home. My family’s heritage is here, and it’s from here that Korio traverses the planet.
