Classic Curves, Modern Craft
Once a defining feature of mid-century pool design, the kidney shape remains an enduring classic. This refurbishment honours that legacy — preserving the pool’s iconic form while elevating it with a clean, modern finish and renewed performance.
The homeowners engaged Mayfair Pools Manawatū to assess options for their aging kidney-shaped concrete pool, weighing up relocation versus refurbishment.
Once it was established they’d keep the original shape, the focus for the project shifted to honouring the original character of the pool while bringing it into a modern context. The clients chose to embrace the unique aesthetics of the existing kidney shape - a classic freeform design that adds softness and flow to the landscape.
The brief focused on breathing new life into the pool while retaining its charm, creating a space that felt both refreshed and intentional. The goal was to achieve a high-end, “like-new” finish while improving durability, waterproofing, and overall functionality.
The end result is a revitalised space that celebrates the pool’s original form, blending classic midcentury design with modern performance to create a functional and striking feature for the home.
What the client has to say:
“At one point, we even thought about moving the pool – but we’re so pleased we didn’t. By resurfacing the pool and removing the terracotta and replacing it with crazy paving, it all brought it to life. It completely modernised the area to suit the house. It feels like a brand-new pool… now we spend a lot of time there in the evenings.”
