Set among orderly rows of olive trees and overlooking the winding inlet below, this elevated infinity pool is a direct response to its remarkable setting. Positioned high above the estuary, its orientation draws the eye from grove to gulf, extending the waterline toward distant hills through a clean infinity edge.

 

Set among orderly rows of olive trees and overlooking the winding inlet below, this elevated infinity pool is a direct response to its remarkable setting. Positioned high above the estuary, its orientation draws the eye from grove to gulf, extending the waterline toward distant hills through a clean infinity edge.

The design is defined by strong, simple geometry and a restrained material palette. Light-toned pool surrounds provide a clean edge to the water, while timber decking introduces warmth and continuity with the adjacent outdoor living areas. A frameless glass balustrade encloses the pool without interrupting sightlines, reinforcing the openness of the space.

Accessing the site presented a challenge in itself. With established orchard trees planted closely together, and a steep incline leading to the pool area, there was little room for the large machinery typically used during excavation and construction. The team adapted their usual approach, using smaller equipment wherever possible and completing much of the work by hand. Materials and tools also had to be carefully carried through the orchard to the site, making the build a particularly physical one for everyone involved.

I was born in Canada, and grew up around Vancouver and the mountains of British Columbia. My love of pristine environments led me to New Zealand and eventually to the mountains, lakes and rivers of the central North Island which is home. My family’s heritage is here, and it’s from here that Korio traverses the planet.
